Read This If You're Feeling Mentally Overwhelmed

Why do I feel like I’m constantly in fight or flight? Or a constant mental battle with myself? I realize I’m dealing with it all day when it hits me like a ton of bricks. As I’m sitting on the couch feeding Olivia, I’m so swamped by all the emotions that I start to cry. I’m sad. I’m anxious. I’m frustrated. I am all the above. But why? Everything seems to be fine and in tact. Nothing to really stress about from an outside perspective. I have everything I need. We are all okay, and all healthy.

I try to run over everything I’m feeling in my head and find a why. It’s not really working. And then I realize, maybe it’s because I’m putting pressure on myself to feel a certain way. Whenever I start to feel any of these sad, anxious, and frustrated feelings, I immediately punish myself in my head. Why is our self talk so mean sometimes? The things we say to ourselves are most likely things you would never say to one of our friends, or even our worst enemies.

It’s hard enough to live in a world where we are constantly being told to STRESS. In a world where we are living in a 2+ year pandemic, maybe we are in a constant state of fight or flight. And that’s tiring. That is hard. And if you’re feeling it too, I am here to acknowledge that for you. Our brains and are bodies aren’t designed or meant to take on the constant state of fight or flight. But what I do know is that we’ve overcome and dealt with things in the past, and each one of us have already made it through 100% of our terrible days. This feeling is temporary, just like those others were. Little mental slumps make us feel so thankful for our great days. And I’m beginning to think that’s the way we learn to appreciate things in this thing called life. Unfortunately, it doesn’t make it any less hard.

If you are reading this, and you are mentally overwhelmed, overstimulated, or just having an overall shitty day, or week, or month; I see you. Here’s my list of some easy-to-do things that have helped for me that could get you through a slump. They shouldn’t take too much brain power.

+ go get a large coffee
+ go on a walk
+ cuddle with your dog
+ take an extra long shower
+ light a candle
+ draw with no intent of sharing on social media
+ walk around at your fav store
+ eat something sweet
+ go for a drive
+ lie down and take 5 deep belly breaths

What are some of the things you do to get you out of a slump?

I’ll be back with something lighter soon :)
